During this Rhythmer Awards, you said that you can work in perfect harmony and is comfortable with G-Dragon, right? We would like to hear more about how it's like.. Choice37: First of all, G-Dragon is very free and he is definitely creative. That’s why it’s easy to work with him. He grasps the concept very quickly. In order to make a good song, you should have a certain concept instead of just filling in the 16 measures with rap, and G-Dragon is excellent in that field.
리: “One of Kind”는 어떻게 탄생하게 된 거예요?
초: 회사에서는 매월 ‘비트 미팅’이라고 해서 모든 프로듀서들의 비트를 스튜디오에 모여서 듣는 시간이 있어요. 그때 제가 비트를 만들어서 테디에게 들려준 후에 비트 미팅에 가지고 갔거든요. 사장님이 그 곡을 듣더니 ‘아, 이건 지용이한테 주라.’라고 했어요. 그 곡만큼은 사장님이 직접 지용이한테 주라고 한 거죠. 회사에서는 사장님이 음악을 다 듣고 직접 결정하는 편이에요.

How was "One of A Kind" created? Choice37: In YG, we have a monthly ‘beat meeting’ where all producers gather in the studio and listen to our beats. At that time, I made a beat and I let Teddy hear it first and then I brought it to our beat meeting. When Yang Hyun Suk heard the song he said "Ah, give this to Jiyong." He wanted that particular song for Jiyong. In our company, it’s usually the president who listens to all of the music and decides who it belongs to.
리: 다른 YG아티스트들과 관계는 어떤가요?
초: YG의 분위기는 운동장 같아서 굉장히 좋아요. 복도에 보면 세그웨이(Segway)도 있고 여러 가지 팝 아트 작품들도 걸려있잖아요. 그래서인지 함께 작업할 때에도 재미있어요. 새로운 아이디어와 컨셉트를 잡아가는 과정이 즐겁죠. 영배나 탑도 음악적으로 열정이 넘쳐요. 제가 작업실에 가만히 있으면 음악 좀 들려달라고 찾아오죠.

How’s your relationship with other YG artists? Choice37: YG’s atmosphere is like a big gym so I really like it. If you look at the hallways, there are segways and various pop arts. That’s why it’s very fun to work there. It’s a pleasure to discover new concepts and ideas. Youngbae and TOP are also very passionate about music. When I’m just sitting in my studio they would come and ask me for new music.
리: 어느 분이 제일 (음악을 들려달라며) 귀찮게 하나요?
초: (웃음) 영배가 제일 많이 찾아와요. 음악을 사랑하는 것이 느껴져요. 항상 에너지가 넘치거든요. 특히, 음악에 대한 센스가 남다르죠. 미겔(Miguel)이나 프랭크 오션(Frank Ocean)을 같이 듣기도 하고요.

Who bothers you by asking you for music the most? Choice37: (Laughs) Youngbae comes to me the most. I can really feel that he loves music. He’s always full of energy. Especially, he has an outstanding sense of music. We listen to Miguel and Frank Ocean together.
리: 주로 빅뱅 멤버들과 교류를 많이 하는 편이군요.
초: 제일 친하기도 하고 잘 통해요.

So you interact with Big Bang members the most.
Choice37: They’re my closest artist and we have many connections.
리: 투애니원(2NE1)은 어떤가요?
초: 투애니원도 좋죠. 그런데 투애니원은 테디가 총괄하는 프로젝트에요. 사장님이 테디에게 일임을 했죠. 그리고 여자라 그런지 스튜디오에서는 자주 못 봐요. 그런데 영배는 놀러 와서 컴퓨터도 쓰고 지용이도 자주 왔다갔다해서 대화가 많죠.

How about 2NE1? Choice37: 2NE1’s great as well. But 2NE1 is in Teddy’s hands. The president gave the assignment to Teddy. And since they’re girls, I don’t see them often in the studio. But Youngbae comes over and sees me often, uses my computer as well (he means YB is that close to him to use his personal computer), Jiyong often comes and goes too that we (Choice37, YB, GD) communicate/converse a lot.
리: 요즘 함께 모이면 주로 어떤 음악을 들어요?
초: 힙합 쪽으로는 에이샙 록키(A$ap Rocky), 켄드릭 라마(Kendrick Lamar)도 함께 듣고요. 알앤비는 아까 말했던 미겔이나 프랭크 오션을 듣죠. 그뿐만 아니라 많은 뮤지션의 음악을 들어요.

What kind of music do you guys listen to when you guys are together?
Choice37: In hip hop, we listen to A$ap Rocky, Kendrick Lamar together. In R&B, as I mentioned earlier, I listen to Miguel or Frank Ocean. Not only that we listen to many other musicians as well.
리: 대부분 YG의 음악은 아이돌 팬덤을 제외하더라도 팝 팬들과 흑인음악 마니아들까지 사로잡은 경우가 많아요. 이런 YG음악의 힘이 무엇이라 생각하는지 궁금해요.
초: 준수한 퀄리티라고 생각해요. 사람들이 갈수록 음악을 듣는 귀가 높아지잖아요. 그래서 그런지 사장님부터 음악의 퀄리티를 중요하게 여기는 것 같아요. 겉으로만 반짝거리는 것보다 솔직한 음악이 어필하잖아요. 우선적으로 지용이나 영배 모두가 솔직하게 하고 싶은 음악을 하니까 전달이 잘 되는 것 같아요. 판을 많이 팔아야 한다고 생각하고 작업하는 것은 아니거든요. 심지어 아기들에게 들려줘도 진짜인지 아닌지 알거든요. 음악에 진심이 담겨있는지 아닌지 누구나 알 수 있으니까요.

Almost all of YG’s music has caught the ears, not only amony idol fandoms, but pop fans and black music manias. Where does this power of YG’s music come from?
Choice37: I think from our outstanding quality. As time passes, the public’s ears want more high quality music. I think that’s why the president considers the quality of our music very important. Rather than music that’s shiny on the outside, honest music appeals more to the public. I think the reason why Jiyong and Youngbae receive a lot of love is because they do the music they want to do, expressing their honest words. They don’t work aiming to sell many albums. Even when babies hear the song they know if it’s real or not. Anyone can see the sincerity in music.
